What is it like to dream?
Is dreaming simply the natural process of resting each night, a time where our minds wander into worlds filled with impossible, chaotic, and extraordinary moments? Or is it something deeper? A silent yet powerful goal we set for ourselves, one that pushes us forward even when the road ahead feels uncertain?
For many people, dreaming seems effortless or a choice. People dream occasionally, because it is as simple as falling off a log. In kindergarten, one’s dream was to be an astronaut one day. Moving up to secondary school, one’s dream changes erratically, aiming to attain excellent grades and be admitted into a prestigious school. Later in life, one may dream of living a peaceful retirement.
On the other side of the world, the refugees, you, who used to dream, hearts lit with fiery passion, eyes full of curiosity, and a mouth thirsty for knowledge, are facing numerous devastating hardships. Despondency hits us like a ton of bricks; dreams are unreachable.
Yet, history shows us that even the tiniest dreams can blossom into something extraordinary.
Take Malala Yousafzai, for example. Growing up in a place where girls were not allowed to attend school, her dream was simple: she wanted an education. Despite facing threats and violence, she held onto that dream. Even after being attacked, she did not give up. Instead, she continued to speak up. She dreamt not just for herself, but for millions of girls around the world.
Though things may seem tough now, as if hope is vanishing like silver smoke into thin air, tugging on a thin thread that is grasping the edge of the cliff so desperately, remember that you are not alone. There are organizations here to support and guide you, as well as governmental schemes that are actively aiding you.
Dream about your future and think, “I will live a life full of love and happiness, because everything will turn out alright.” Dream about your education and never diminish your sense of curiosity — ask yourself questions such as, “What interests me?” or “Why does the river flow downstream?”
Lastly, dream about your goals and aspirations, and never lose hope. And one day, that tiny seed will become something beautiful. It will become an ethereal tree standing tall, strong, and full of life.
Dream big and hold on to them.
Because even the smallest seeds of hope can grow into powerful tomorrows.
