Jack of all trades
by Shreeya Chaube
“Jack of all trades, master of none” is a very common phrase used to describe someone who has explored many skills but failed to truly master any.
This state isn’t very common nowadays; most students tend to pick a niche early on and dedicate themselves entirely to becoming the best in that one field.
Then come people like me, those who fall in love with everything they try. We pursue each interest with equal passion and excitement, yet often fall short of recognition because we never pause long enough to commit completely to just one.
If you take me as an example, I’ve been dancing for as long as I can remember, playing tennis since grade 5, and my love for debating led me into the world of MUNs. My passion for theatre is just as strong as my love for dance, which is why I’ve taken up every role I could, big or small. And last, but definitely not least, there’s my eternal love for writing, the very reason I’m able to express myself through this piece today.
Despite all this passion, I only have a handful of achievements in some areas and appreciation in a few. Which makes me wonder: Was I wrong to explore so much and master none? When I look around, I see people excelling in the one field they chose. It makes me question what I could have achieved if I had focused on just one path and let go of the rest.
Amidst all these thoughts, I came across the full quote: “Jack of all trades, master of none, though oftentimes better than master of one.” And somehow, that brought me a sense of relief.
We live in a world that evolves at an unimaginable pace, one that no one can fully keep up with, especially in the age of AI. In such a world, mastering just one thing may not always be enough to sustain yourself. Every day brings new challenges, and having a diverse set of skills not only helps you adapt but also creates unique opportunities for success.
So, the next time someone calls you a “jack of all trades,” wear that title with pride.
Know that you are someone who dared to explore beyond limits.
Someone who chose curiosity over comfort
Someone who is, in many ways, greater than a master of one.
That's all for today,
Stay curious, Stay human.
