You're a Superhero

by Alonna Freerksen

Resilience as defined by the American Psychological Association as…

“The ways in which individuals view and engage with the world, the availability and quality of social resources, and specific coping strategies.”—A.P.A

But it's more than that isn’t it? Resilience is standing up despite getting knocked down. A well known example is Spider Man who is known for his resilience whether its Peter Parker, Miles Morales, or Gwen Stacy they never stay down for long. They get back up, that's their main philosophy. I really like Spider Man when talking about resilience because a second theme they share is that all the Spider People are that anyone can wear the mask no matter who you are.

Resilience is still even more than just getting back up again. It’s staring at something that you know might crush you and continuing forward. Moving to a new place, standing up for what you believe in, and most of all letting your voice be heard. Using Spider Man again, he fights a villain for three days and nights straight. No breaks, refusing to stop, determined to save others.

Just as Spidey jokes and laughs on and off the battlefield there’s always something to smile about. There are people worth fighting for and the end result of saving the city is always worth it.

Resilience is more than a simple, or neat definition about coping skills and emotional resources. It’s about never giving up determination and taking grit. Even if you feel exhausted at times, or it feels overwhelming like a tightness in your chest that won’t seem to fade. Perseverance is worth it to be with the people you care about and achieve your dreams. No matter what villains, or the world throws at you. There is always a reason to get back up again.
